Community Spotlight: GIGIL – Learn Play Grow

GIGIL is an indoor play space that has something for everyone.  But during this time, they are working hard to bring you a lot of online classes and summer camps to entertain and teach your little ones.  We are so excited to help shine a light on GIGIL for this weeks Community Spotlight!

“GIGIL is a fun, inspiring indoor play space for children to embrace creativity, learning and personal growth. We have a vision to become a resource for families from pregnancy through early childhood years.

In addition to being an indoor playground, GIGIL also offers a co-working space for parents with supervised play for children. The co-working space is located in our Parent’s Lounge and our staff offers supervision for children in the main play area while parents work. This service is offered as a solution to childcare whether it be on a regular basis or as needed, as a last minute childcare solution.

Parenthood is hard, and at times it takes a village to get through it. We are a strong advocate for parent support for families in our community. GIGIL partners with Robin Giesen, MFT to offer a weekly parent support group for expecting and postpartum mothers. There are also plans in the works to offer a lactation support group in the future. GIGIL’s “Mother Hustler Mixer” is a networking group for working moms. This group meets every other month and the goal of each meeting is to support one another as working moms as well as grow our networks to support each other’s businesses. It is always inspiring and encouraging to be around other women that are mompreneurs and juggling it all at the same time!”

What inspired you to launch this business?

“The idea for GIGIL was born out of my own needs as a mom. I have been a work from home mom since 2015 when my first son was born. Since then I have experienced the need for a clean and safe environment where he could play, have social interaction with peers and engage in activities such as art and sensory classes. I have also been in situations where I have been on a business deadline with no childcare options available. Having a place that I could bring my kids with last minute notice so I could get some work done was essential. I wanted to bring this service to work from home parents because I know how difficult it is to get work done with kids home at the same time!

After the birth of my daughter it became almost impossible to find childcare for two kids so I could just get away to take a class at my pilates studio. I tried gyms that offered a kids club, but never found the quality, studio experience I was used to pre-kids. I also was never very comfortable with the quality of care for my children in those places. I felt there wasn’t enough for him to do and the staffed lacked the engagement he deserved. GIGIL’s adult fitness classes bring a studio fitness experience for parents while the children have supervised play in the main play area. Parents can feel good about taking the hour to themselves while the kids are having fun playing. Our staff does an amazing job in engaging with the children to not only hold their attention but ensure they’re having fun and being safe.

I wanted to create a place that was community driven. Where anyone can walk-in and feel welcome, on their good days and their bad days. GIGIL is a judgement free zone for both kids and parents. We make a point at GIGIL to get to know the families that come through our doors and we enjoy seeing our members on a regular basis.”

What is one of your proudest moments?

“I am very proud to have made a difference for so many parents in the short time GIGIL has been open. I have received so many compliments and positive feedback from the experience children and families have had at GIGIL. Specifically, I am so proud that our co-working space has made such a big difference for work from home parents. I have even seen friendships between moms and children blossom during their time at GIGIL. THAT is what GIGIL is all about- community and friendship.

Just the fact that GIGIL has made it through its first year in business is a major proud moment for me. This has been a huge labor of love that I have fueled with determination and endless hours of hard work. I could not have done any of it without the support of my family.”

What can one expect when visiting your location?

“Our customers can expect a clean and inviting environment. GIGIL was designed to be a welcoming space that parents enjoy coming to. You won’t find any primary colors on our walls or distracting patterns. Instead we have a very clean and sophisticated modern look to our space. We truly value our customers and enjoy getting to know them. We pride ourselves in offering superior service to all the families that come through our doors. Parents should expect a playground designed to hold children’s interest for hours and a place where social interaction is encouraged! If children are in supervised play, our staff closely interacts with them and provides excellent care. Most importantly, our customers should expect to have fun while they’re here!”

We are natives to Long Beach and both alumni to Lakewood High School. I am a freelance marketing consultant specializing in social media marketing. What do you enjoy doing in the South Bay when you are not working?

“Our family loves going to the beach! Most warm days you’ll find us down on the sand in Belmont Shore. We are also members at the Aquarium of the Pacific and visit as often as possible! One of our favorite things about living in the South Bay is that we are surrounded by small businesses, and we make a point to support them as much as we can!”

How do you give back to the community?

“GIGIL partners with Ronald McDonald House Long Beach to do a toy and household goods drive during the holiday season. Last year we were able to donate dozens of items to the charity to make a difference for families in need.”
