Community Spotlight: Code Ninjas, Torrance
Tell us about your company:
KIDS HAVE FUN, PARENTS SEE RESULTS®
“Code Ninjas Torrance is a STEM based learning center, where we channel kids’ desire for playing video games into building video games by teaching them to code using a gamified learning platform. They learn problem solving, critical thinking, and STEM skills in a fun, safe, and inspiring environment.”
What inspired you to launch this business?
“Working for Big Tech companies made us see the need for coding literacy as a critical skillset needed to succeed in our rapidly evolving market. We see a critical gap in existing school curriculums in prepping our children for a rapidly growing digital future. As parents, we already see our children’s desire to use and play with technology with an increased curiosity of how it works, which often go unanswered. All of these are reasons for us to open Code Ninjas in our hometown of Torrance. We believe that exposing kids to coding at an early age will help with problem solving and critical thinking skills in using technology to solve challenges around them, and most importantly prepare them for a digital first world.”
What is one of your proudest moments?
“Our proudest moment so far has been when we wrapped up our first class and asked the students what they thought. We noticed how excited the students got once they completed their coding courses and are able to play with what they built. One of the kids yelled, “This is the best class I’ve ever had” with such excitement, which made all the challenges in our journey to get here worth it.”
What can one expect when signing up for Code Ninja Classes?
“Kids can expect to enter a parent free zone to play the games they enjoy while learning how they work and most importantly, how to build their own. Outside of coding they also get exposure to other STEM activities like circuits and robotics.”
“Parents can expect a fun and safe environment with productive screen time where kids can gain critical thinking and problem solving skills.”
Tell us a little about you:
“The owners were both raised in the South Bay and have lived here for more than 30 years and now raising their own families here. They have benefited from what the South Bay has to offer and now looking to give back to their community.”
What do you enjoy doing in the South Bay when you are not working?
“Volunteering at the community level. Enjoying local beaches, eateries, parks, spending time with friends and family.
How do you give back to the community?
“We believe every kid should have the opportunity to learn how to code. We are partnering with local organizations to provide free access to our curriculum to those who may not have otherwise have had access to coding courses.
The owners and their families also help organize and participate in social services such as food drives and health fairs in the South Bay community via local nonprofit organizations.
In the future, as our company grows, we aim to partner with schools & PTAs in the South Bay, donate to local charitable causes and sponsor local teams.”
